Informing Ourselves to Death

A Plea for Deliberative Ignorance in the Age of Information Overload

Palgrave Macmillan Cham, 2026

Ignaas Devisch

informing ourselve to death

Today, the information overload challenges our ways to orientate in the world. Though many argue that increased media literacy is the best solution to combat misinformation, disinformation, and information overload, this book argues instead for the value perspective of well-considered deliberative ignorance. Well-considered Deliberative ignorance is a conscious, individual or collective choice not to seek out or use information. The well-considered deliberative ignoring of information works complementary to the skills of dealing critically with information. What is better to ignore can be grouped into three categories: information that distracts us, disinformation, and interventions from malicious players on the internet. While most books end up with ticks and tricks to be better informed, I do the opposite. Today, the challenge threat is not ‘amusing ourselves to death’, we should withhold ourselves from it is about ‘informing ourselves to death.’
